Cultural South-Essex: I like the look of ADP’s proposed £27m Library and Learning Centre which is set to replace the dilapidated and generally grim Farringdon car park at Southend’s Elmer Square. The project is due to complete in August 2013 and will additionally provide a base for the Focal Point Gallery as well as housing a new café and a lecture theatre. The clean cut planes of the neatly set-out punched geometric forms coupled with the sparkling but neutral colours contrasts well with the run-down garishness of the amusement arcades and teenage-owned neon souped-up cars that parade along Southend’s run-down esplanade. A welcome addition to Southend’s seaside fabric and a point in the right direction of improving the town’s standing in the national conscience.

thesis drawing 01: interpreting an instant dream-like scenario for the city of chester. the cathedral of st werburgh forms the basis from which the people of chester develop their dreams on their final journey to their divine rewards. elements from a living textbook of memories and power form the remnants of the dream which blur and safely collide into one another in creating a fluid scenario from which life moves into the stage of the unknown.

The proposals indicate a striking skeletal form announcing how the intense piping network can create a sculptural anatomy which rises from the within the dense natural growth of the urban park whilst coherently creating the networked system of feed required to realise the full efficiency of a hydroponic growing pod system as detailed in the original client’s brief.

I am feeling a lot better about how this looks today than I did at 2am this morning. It was looking way too heavy last night. Confidence in what I am trying to achieve is seeping through again.

the creation of hydroponic growing pods will realise my diagrammatic route of designing specific micro-climatic environments for specific planting types. one design idea that i am keen to pursue is to create a dark feeling architecture from which the coloured blooms will contrast greatly. birmingham is an industrial city. the architecture should reflect this. what grows within the architecture will be an indication of a possible future scenario for the city.
